On Sunday 9 club members cycled Day 2 of the Esk 2 Esk Road road route between Eskdale (Ravenglass) and Esk Valley (Whitby) passing through 3 National Parks and crossing the Vale of York after 6 of us stayed in the Station Inn near Oxenholme which we highly recommend.

Day 2 was the Queen stage leaving eastern Lake District past the Howgill Fells into and across the Yorkshire Dales. Over 10 hours we rode 132 km (82.5 miles) ascending a total of 2,465 m which involved more stonking ascents and more fabulous descents. The weather was cold turning wet before drying up which partly spoilt the views. The long steep climb up The Fleak is rightly name Horrabank at its start. Our PM stop at the Stu’s top notch Dales Bike Centre at Fremington was a pleasure as always. Note the Kirkby Stephen railway viaduct (closed), the lovely cobbled village of Dent, the Carlisle - Settle railway viaduct (used), cycling into Hawes, cycling through Askrigg where Creatures Great and Small was filmed, views of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales and cycling past ancient terracing called lynches en route to the Vale of York.
