Route: Helworth & Swaledale loop by MTB
Date of Ride: 25 May, 2019

Expertly led by Graham, on Saturday, 4 of us rode the Helworth & Swaledale loop mostly in dry weather, but finishing in light rain. At 40 km long and a total of 1,134m of ascent, this route was a cracker with many climbs and some fine descents, including one of the best in the UK – the Storthwaite Quarry descent. Altogether, this route was far too full of photo opps.

Note: many lead mining remains, modernised miner’s cottages, a grouse chick destined to grow up to be shot for sport, historical fuel pumps and about 20 Harleys which passed us. The walled road is called Stang Lane and is much steeper than it looks in the pic. Stang means ‘boundary’ and is a word brought over by the Vikings, same as dale which means a valley.
